Having provided some resource lists for parents, it is now appropriate to provide some reading lists for Christians who desire to grow in grace. Here are two reading lists that I hope will be of great benefit as you grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

Desiring God Reading List

This Sunday morning we will be addressing the issue of spiritual maturity/immaturity. As we do, I want to say a special word of exhortation to parents. The Bible reminds us that it is the responsibility of parents to disciple their children toward Christian maturity (Deuteronomy 6:4-9, 20-25; Psalm 78; Ephesians 6:4). The Bible also gives us examples of children who were trained in the faith by family: i.e., Timothy (2 Timothy 3:15).

Therefore, I want to exhort parents to continue in this battle for spiritual maturity or begin if they have yet to do so. In order to do that, I want to provide some resources that will benefit you greatly. First, Ray Van Neste has provided a helpful and somewhat thorough resource of Bible Materials for Children. I suggest you work through it and begin implementing it if you have not done so already. Van Neste also has a blog dedicated to children’s literature called The Children’s Hour.

Secondly, I have compiled a brief list of reading materials that families can read with their children.

This Sunday I exhorted the congregation of High Pointe to memorize with me 1 Corinthians 13 in the ESV translation. If you do not have an approach to memorizing Scripture, I would highly recommend my friend Andy Davis’ method. When Andy and I were in seminary together, we would hang out on occasion by our apartments and much of our conversations were saturated in Scripture because Andy had memorized so much of it.

Here is Andy’s approach: An Approach to the Extended Memorization of Scripture

By the way, this is also the approach that John Piper presents in his book, When I Don’t Desire God: How to Fight for Joy.

May we hide God’s Word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him!

Grace and peace,

Pastor Juan

This Sunday we will consider 1 Corinthians 1:17-31. It has been incredibly humbling to immerse myself in the study of the power of the cross. For further contemplation on the cross of Christ, I would recommend the following books:

In My Place Condemned He Stood: Celebrating the Glory of the Atonement
by J. I. Packer and Mark Dever

The Truth of the Cross
by R. C. Sproul

The Cross of Christ
by John R. W. Stott

One of the great implications of the message of the cross is humility. When we have a biblical understanding of the cross of Christ and God’s sovereign grace in salvation, it will bring us to humility. To further explore this often denied theme, see:

Humility: True Greatness
by C. J. Mahaney

To consider how we are to live continually in light of the cross, see:

Living the Cross-Centered Life: Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing

by C. J. Mahaney

For a great daily devotional in living a gospel-centered life, see:

In Christ Alone: Living the Gospel-Centered Life

Well, we arrived in Houston on Sunday night, but missed our connection to Austin. We ended up getting a rental car and made it home before our other scheduled flight took off from Houston. It was great to be home and in the office on Monday.

On Tuesday, I went to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to be a part of the Building Healthy Churches conference sponsored by 9 Marks. It was a joy to be with Mark Dever and to see Matt Schmucker again. I was able to take with me our pastoral intern and our church planting resident. It was both an encouraging and convicting conference.

After arriving in Fort Worth and realizing how big my hotel room was, I called up Jeanine and she came up with the girls. After the conference ended on Wednesday, we were able to enjoy some time in Dallas together.

It is great to be home. Thankfully, I will not be traveling again until May when we take a team to Cuba. Thank you High Pointe for your kindnesses to me and my family in allowing me this time away. May God continue to have His way with us.

Worshipping in Mexico City

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I have the privilege of worshipping with our Christian brothers in Mexico City. It is a great joy to sing in Spanish and hear Mark Dever preach in English while being translated into Spanish.

Oh how it makes me long for the new heaven and earth!

Until then, I miss our High Pointe family! Lord willing I will be back in Austin tonight.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Juan

A Beautiful Morning in Mexico City

Posted by: | Comments (0)

As I went from my hotel to our conference, I was able to enjoy a cool, sunny walk in Mexico City.

I found a convenience store and was able to get some prodigestive yogurt and fresh coffee-all for just over 2 dollars US.

I am looking forward to a great day of fellowship with our Mexican brethren.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Juan
